Social Protection as a Catalyst for Climate Resilience

Though separated by geography, ecosystems, and biodiversity, #Brazil, #Zimbabwe, and #Vanuatu share a story of climate vulnerability. But more importantly, they tell a story of resilience and innovation, one that puts the protection of people at the heart of climate action.

Social protection is not a new solution. For decades, it has been a cornerstone of development strategies. But in the context of climate change, social protection takes on a new dimension. It becomes a framework of socially-focused policies and programmes that equip people with the tools they need to adapt, innovate, and thrive in the face of climate challenges, especially through effective water management. Water is a critical resource for resilience, enabling communities to sustain agriculture, mitigate disasters, and secure livelihoods in an increasingly unpredictable climate. For example, in Haiti, the Enhanced Climate Resilience project uses vouchers to empower communities to protect themselves against water-related disasters. In Gambia, the Climate Resilient Water Sector project targets social protection beneficiaries to improve water management practices, ensuring sustainable access to this vital resource. These examples demonstrate how water-centric social protection programmes can safeguard livelihoods and build long-term resilience.

The joint publication “Social Protection and Inclusive Climate Action” analyzes 23 Green Climate Fund projects (https://lnkd.in/gzgsAV_z), where social protection was integrated into the investment design. These projects demonstrate the transformative potential of combining social protection with climate action!
