When we think about climate change, we often picture melting glaciers, rising sea levels, or extreme weather events like hurricanes and wildfires. But there’s another silent yet devastating consequence of our warming planet that doesn’t get enough attention: marine heatwaves (MHWs). These events, defined as prolonged periods of unusually high ocean temperatures, are becoming more frequent and intense as global temperatures rise—and their impacts are far-reaching.
Marine heatwaves might seem like a distant problem, something that only affects the ocean and the creatures living in it. But the truth is, their impacts are felt far and wide, touching every aspect of our lives—from the food we eat to the water we drink to the stability of our global economy. By understanding the interconnectedness of our planet’s systems and taking action to protect them, we can work toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
