The critical role of water in climate adaptation again strongly highlighted the findings of the World Meteorological Organization “State of Climate Services” report. The progress made in developing climate services, particularly in vulnerable regions, while stressing the urgent need for further investment and capacity building. The interconnectedness of water, climate, and human livelihoods is emphasized, with water-related climate services being crucial for reducing vulnerabilities and enhancing resilience across all sectors.
To bridge the adaptation gap, we must accelerate efforts in capacity building, regional collaboration, and blended and innovative finance. Translating climate science into actionable services, integrating Indigenous knowledge, and ensuring inclusive governance is critical for inclusive adaptation.
We need to commitment to making water a central component of our climate adaptation efforts.
1. Accelerate Capacity Building: Invest in upgrading NMHSs worldwide to transition from essential to advanced climate service providers.
2. Enhance Regional Collaboration: Strengthen regional partnerships to share knowledge, resources, and best practices.
3. Mobilize Finance: Bridge the adaptation finance gap by increasing investments in climate services and early warning systems, ensuring that our most vulnerable communities are protected.
4. Innovate and Integrate: Develop and implement innovative climate service tools that incorporate diverse knowledge systems and address the specific needs of all societal sectors.
5. Promote Inclusive Governance: Ensure that climate services are accessible to all, including marginalized groups, enhancing equity and resilience in our adaptation strategies.
The challenges posed by climate change are immense. Let us reinforce our dedication to water-sensitive adaptation, fostering a world where every drop of water contributes to the resilience and prosperity of our planet-#Together
