Water Security as a Cornerstone of Climate Resilience and the 2030 Agenda

Water security is critical to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Access to clean water and sanitation is necessary for goals such as poverty reduction, food security, and climate resilience to become attainable. However, the global water crisis, intensified by climate change, threatens these efforts. Billions still need essential water and sanitation services, and we must be on track to achieve #SDG 6 by 2030.

Innovative solutions and increased investment are urgently needed to build global climate resilience and water security. Green Climate Fund has recognized the importance of water as an interconnected resource vital for adaptation and mitigation. Since its inception, the GCF has mobilized over $2.8 billion for water security projects in developing countries.

These funds support various efforts, including early warning systems, ecosystem-based water adaptation, wetland restoration, water efficiency, conservation schemes, etc. The GCF uses concessional loans, equity investments, and guarantees to stimulate private sector finance and aligns water investments with broader climate action to promote sustainability.

Partnerships that combine public and private funding are crucial to meeting the estimated capital costs of $114 billion per year required for universal water security. Advances in climate science, risk assessment and data accessibility provide a solid foundation for informed adaptation planning.
