The health of our oceans offers promise in the fight against climate change, but only if we act decisively to leverage their potential responsibly and equitably. The ocean naturally absorbs over a quarter of annual carbon emissions. We can optimise this process by protecting marine ecosystems and enhancing natural ocean carbon sinks. Mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes are incredibly effective “blue carbon” reservoirs we must try to preserve.
Emerging strategies like alkalinity enhancement, ocean fertilization, and direct air capture represent encouraging potential to increase the ocean’s carbon absorption capacity further. However, we must approach deploying these innovations with the utmost caution and care. All interventions must be grounded in the latest science, with transparent risk assessments and governance mechanisms.
For ocean-based carbon removal to succeed, we need holistic, integrated ocean management that balances diverse objectives. This hinges on inclusive decision-making and sharing the bounty of the seas equitably. Indigenous knowledge and local community leadership must be at the heart of the process.
Progress depends on pursuing multiple complementary solutions while accelerating the energy transition. The ocean can and must be part of a comprehensive response. But we must get the governance right. With care, wisdom and solidarity!
